Installing Antivirus on Windows

This Article Applies to:

  • Essential/Premium/Ultimate Business Security
  • Small Office Protection

For installation instructions for macOS and Linux, see Installing Antivirus on macOS and Installing Avast Business Antivirus for Linux.

For the unmanaged Small Business Solutions and Small Office Protection, you can download the installer from https://www.avast.com/installation-files (make sure you go to the Business tab). Select either the online or offline installer for the Antivirus version you have. The offline installer is mostly only required for devices in isolated/slow/limited networks, the online installer will download all necessary files during setup.

With the online installer, the other services will be downloaded upon installation of the Antivirus agent. This option is not recommended if you are installing Antivirus on multiple devices at the same time, as each machine will individually contact Avast servers to download the other services.

Once the installer for the desired Antivirus version is executed, you can select to install with default components or customize:

Customizing Installation

  1. Copy the installer file to a location accessible by the end device
  2. Double-click on the installer file to run it
  3. If asked to allow the application to make changes to your device, click Yes
  4. Click Customize, then do one of the following:
    • Select Recommended protection to install all components
    • Select Minimal protection to install only File, Web, and Mail Shield
    • Select Custom protection so you can check and uncheck the specific components you would like to install. For information on which components are not recommended in a business environment, see Recommended Components for Servers and Workstations.
  5. Click Install and wait while Essential/Premium/Ultimate Business Security is installed on your device
  6. When prompted, restart the device

In some instances, you may need to perform the installation on devices in an isolated/offline network. To ensure your devices are configured properly, see Configuring Antivirus for Isolated Networks.

Once you have installed Antivirus on your device, be sure to activate your subscription following the information in Activating Subscriptions. Note that not all components (such as Firewall) appear in the first installation overview, but only upon subscription activation. The setup will run with minimal components first, and you can add the extra ones after activating the subscription.

To be able to pre-select all components, you should run the setup with a license file instead. In that case, the Customize Installation screen will include the following options:

Installing with a Logon Script

You can install Essential/Premium/Ultimate Business Security as a logon script, as long as you change the file location to reflect the location and name of the install file on your network (\\server\install\avast_business_antivirus_setup.exe).

If you are not familiar with how to use a logon script with your domain, search the Microsoft website for your domain controller's OS and how to use logon scripts. This article details how to use logon scripts.
