SecureLine VPN for Android

This Article Applies to:

  • Avast Small Office Protection

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Mobile Protection has been removed from all Small Business Solutions subscriptions (Essential/Premium/Ultimate Business Security) due to low adoption. The mobile devices with the subscriptions activated are reverted to the free version. Small Office Protection subscriptions are not affected at this time.

SecureLine VPN is a standalone app, separate from Avast Mobile Security that helps protect your phone's internet traffic. It secures your internet connection using an encrypted tunnel to disguise your real location and prevent others from eavesdropping on your online activity over public Wi-Fi and unsecured networks.

Avast SecureLine VPN mainly offers:

  • Protection - When many people connect to the same public network, attackers can capture sensitive data, such as login credentials. The encrypted VPN connection provides efficient protection against these types of attacks.
  • Anonymization - With broadband connections, many people have fixed IP addresses that can be tracked when browsing sensitive sites. With a VPN connection, the browsing session is effectively anonymized - the IP address the remote server sees is the address of the VPN server, not the user.
  • Unrestricted internet access - When connected to a VPN server in another location, you gain access to content that may be restricted in your location. This allows you to browse freely, even from countries with web censorship.

Installing SecureLine VPN

  1. Download the VPN app from Google Play Store
  2. If necessary, click Accept to allow the download to begin
  3. Click Install
  4. Once the installation is complete, tap Open to start using the app

Activating SecureLine VPN

Your purchase of the Avast Business solutions should come with a subscription code you can use to activate SecureLine VPN for your mobile devices, which should also be tied to your Avast account. The number of devices you can activate depends on the subscription you purchased (if you have a subscription for 10 seats for instance, you can install Mobile Security on 10 mobile devices).

Activating Using Activation Code

  1. From the SecureLine VPN app's home screen, tap the overflow menu icon (three dots: ⋮) in the top right corner and select the Already purchased? option (alternatively, tap the gear icon to go to Settings > Subscription > Already Purchased?)
  2. Select Enter activation code
  3. Type or paste your activation code into the text box, including hyphens
  4. Tap Activate to complete the activation

Activating Using Avast Account

  1. From the SecureLine VPN app's home screen, tap the overflow menu icon (three dots: ⋮) in the top right corner and select the Already purchased? option (alternatively, tap the gear icon to go to Settings > Subscription > Already Purchased?)
  2. Select Sign in to Avast Account
  3. Enter the credentials for the Avast Account that contains your Avast SecureLine VPN subscription
  4. Tap Sign in to complete the activation

Connecting to SecureLine VPN

To start using SecureLine VPN after activating the service, simply tap Connect on the app's main screen and, if prompted, tap OK to give Avast SecureLine VPN permission to set up a VPN connection.

If prompted, you can optionally tap Activate auto connect to allow SecureLine VPN to connect automatically. Otherwise, tap the X in the top left corner to return to the main screen.

You can change Auto Connect behavior at any time via the app settings.

Connecting to a Different Location

SecureLine VPN has servers in numerous locations, allowing you to bypass geoblocking (location-based content restrictions).

By default, the VPN connects to the Optimal Location. To connect to a different location, tap Server location at the bottom of the main screen and select a preferred country and city from the list.

Configuring SecureLine VPN Settings

To access the settings, open the SecureLine VPN app and then tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. The settings are divided into four sections: Account, Connection Rules, Troubleshooting, and General.

  • Subscription: Lets you view and manage your subscription, link SecureLine VPN to an Avast Account, or remove the device from the subscription
  • Pair devices: Gives you the possibility to activate SecureLine VPN on a new device by pairing it with the existing one

Connection Rules

  • Auto-connect: Choose when the VPN automatically connects. The available options are:
    • When you connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi
    • When you connetc to any Wi-Fi
    • When you connect to any Wi-Fi or cellular data

You can also condition SecureLine VPN to not connect automatically when the device is on a specified trusted network.

  • Split Tunneling: Allows you to select which apps will be encrypted while using VPN
  • Kill Switch: Protects the data on the device from leaking by blocking internet traffic in case the VPN protection drops
  • Wi-Fi Threat Shield: Turns on VPN automatically when you connect to a suspicious network
  • Local network bypass: Lets you access your local network devices (printers, computers, etc.) even when VPN is active
  • VPN Protocol: Lets you select a protocol to use for VPN to influence connection stability and speed

Using Kill Switch alongside other Avast SecureLine VPN features can disrupt your internet access. You may experience the following behavior:

Trusted Networks: When you connect to a trusted network, the VPN will disconnect and Kill Switch will block access to the internet
Split Tunneling: Apps excluded from VPN connection via Split Tunneling will be unable to access the internet
Auto Connect: If you have Auto Connect enabled for Any Wi-Fi and then switch to a cellular network, the VPN disconnects and Kill Switch will block your internet

To regain access to the internet, it is necessary to either connect to the VPN again or disable Kill Switch.
